Development Strategy

In 2009, Dandong Port constructed two large harbor basins and more than 10 large berths. Dadonggou 1# 100 thousand-ton harbor basin had been completed and the construction of the cofferdam of Dadonggou 2# harbor basin was in full swing. 3 50,000-ton-level grain berths had been completed. The work of the earlier stage of 50,000-ton container and multipurpose berths, 100,000-ton ore, oil, and universal berths and 200,000-ton ore and oil berths had been launched comprehensively. 150,000-ton-level channel project and dredging project were carried forward. 5 million-square meter goods yard, international passenger station, production and life auxiliary area, railway in the port, road transportation network and other supporting projects were implemented comprehensively. In addition, Dandong shipbuilding base continued to expand to have the abilities to construct large vessels. The first phase of 2 million-ton soybean oil processing base had been completed. Meanwhile the service supporting system of the port was developed. The comprehensive business center of the port was constructed. The electronic port construction was launched. It was expected to realize the throughput capacity of 60 million tons in 2010 and reach the throughput capacity of 150 million tons in 2015.

In the view of the pattern of opening to the outside world of Liaoning, Dandong Port is the only eastern port in Liaoning coastal port group. Though the construction scale and throughput capacity are inferior to Dalian Port and Yingkou Port at present, its strategic position and role can’t be replaced by other ports. Dandong Port is closest to the port cities in west coast of Korean Peninsula, which is characteristic in Liaoning coastal port group. The direct economic hinterland of Dandong Port is Dandong and surrounding areas and the deep economic hinterland is the eastern area of three provinces in the northeast of China. As the only important marine outfall in the eastern part of northeast, it greatly shortens the distance of going to sea of goods in the eastern area of three provinces in the northeast and alleviates the transportation pressure of railways and roads in the middle of the northeast, which is in favor of the economic rapid development of the east of the northeast. Therefore it is significant to construct Dandong Port, provide service for the economic development of the east of the northeast and construct Dandong Port to be the hub of economic exchange of the inland and Northeast Asia especially Korean Peninsula.
